Engine configuration is the design of the engine block. Common engine configurations include inline, opposed, and V. The configuration describes the way cylinders are arranged in the block. The number of cylinders within the engine block is also used to identify the type of engine design. Engines have 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, or 12 cylinders. The most common engine configurations are inline 4s, V6s, and V8s.
